Governments’ backing for the development and implementation of
a global and comprehensive post- 2012 climate change agreement

The ultimate objective of the project is to achieve a strong
post-2012 climate agreement that provides a solid framework for
all actors to maximise their contribution to climate protection
and adaptation to climate change, for local governments in
particular as key actors in the process.
Associated objectives are to strengthen and build capacity of
local governments world-wide in their local climate action work,
to strengthen their formal responsibilities and to highlight
their positive contribution to climate protection, energy saving
and renewable energy for local development, poverty alleviation,
job creation and sustainable livelihoods.
The specific
objective is to strengthen and maximise the involvement of local
governments in the climate debate towards a strong post-2012
climate agreement the implementation there-of, a) on a national
level in those 7 countries that play an outstanding role in the
climate negotiations due to their rapidly emerging economies:
Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa,
and b) on a global level to advocate for strong climate
protection targets and implementation mechanisms.
The impacts of national dialogues between local and national
levels shall positively influence the climate debate on a global
level.
The project involves the collaboration of UCLG ASPAC, UCLG World
and ICLEI together with a range of Local Governments.
