Second Conference of Coastal Municipalities

24-26 June | Cebu, Philippines

Ten (10) years since the conduct of the First Conference of Coastal Municipalities in May 1999, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) is pleased to announce that the Second Conference of Coastal Municipalities will be convened on June 24-26, 2009 at the Waterfront Hotel Lahug in Cebu City.

The First Conference brought together more than 700 mayors of coastal towns in one forum to discuss priority coastal and fishery issues.  It was convened at the behest of coastal mayors during the 1997 General Assembly following passage of landmark legislations on the fisheries sector, specifically, Republic Act 8550 also known as the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 and Republic Act 8435 or the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act of 1997.

This Second Conference is LMP’s response to the clamor of coastal municipalities for a concerted effort toward addressing the critical issues of climate change, food security, poverty, and marine biodiversity conservation in relation to sustaining municipal fisheries.  The conference is expected to propose action programs and secure commitments from the lgus, national government, donor agencies and other support organizations. The conference is also an opportunity for crm and environmental governance advocates as well as development partners to share learnings and best practices and promote interaction among local chief executives of coastal municipalities.
